I\u2019ve been invited on to talk about regifting, after a revelation by Donald Trump Jr. that his father once regifted him the Christmas present he\u2019d given him the year before.<\/p>\n

I announce that this sort of behaviour is, \u201cabsolutely Scroogey!\u201d and I tell presenters Jodie
\nand Ben that everything must be brand spanking new: \u201cI\u2019d be gutted if I got old cast-offs \u2013
\nI\u2019ve been hinting all year and when I open my presents I expect to be overjoyed!\u201d<\/p>\n

But of course, not everyone shares this opinion on regifting and, in the interests of balance, they bring on a money blogger who\u2019s a firm advocate of recycling unwanted presents.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you go about deciding who to give what to?\u201d asks presenter Jodie. \u201cI think you\u2019ve got to match the present. You\u2019re not going to give a packet of American tan tights to a teenager,\u201d says money blogger Faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cSamantha, what do you think about what Faith\u2019s saying?\u201d asks presenter Ben. \u201cI don\u2019t think she should be giving anyone American tan tights!\u201d I tell them.<\/p>\n

I am an ardent regifter when it comes to giving other people all the shit I don\u2019t want.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If I were in the studio, instead of on the phone, they\u2019d have seen me flounce off flicking my hair, as I announced that I wouldn\u2019t be palmed off with some second hand soap someone\u2019s aunt got them from Lush.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything that\u2019s a cast-off is going to be tainted. It will have a tainted aura about it. And I will KNOW,\u201d I insist to all of Essex. But actually, I\u2019ve been fibbing a bit. Because while I don\u2019t want to receive discarded old tat, I am in fact an ardent regifter when it comes to giving other people all the shit I don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

This Christmas I gave my niece a Perspex pen holder I\u2019d been burdened with on my birthday.\u00a0Considering what kids make out of loo rolls, I\u2019m expecting to see a fully functioning turbo tank charging round the house firing Lego out of all cylinders, the next time I visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nail varnish, bracelets, an unwanted evening bag \u2013 all these things are treasure for children! With four nieces and two nephews, it would be wasteful not to pass on the Impulse body spray my mother imposed upon me last Christmas, the notebook from the Natural History Museum that I\u2019ve <\/span>barely<\/span><\/i> written in, and the Zoella toiletry bag my sister inexplicably foisted on me last year. I mean seriously, do I <\/span>look<\/span><\/i> like Zoella\u2019s target audience?<\/span><\/p>\n

Regifting doesn\u2019t <\/span>just<\/span><\/i> save you money \u2013 it\u2019s also a wonderful way of decluttering and giving unique gifts.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But that plastic bathroom bag made a perfectly charming present for one of the children. Don\u2019t ask me which one because I\u2019ve no idea now \u2013 I just opened my treasure chest (a.k.a. my suitcase) and let them have a rummage. You don\u2019t even need to wrap this shit. I told them: \u201cThis way you can <\/span>choose<\/span><\/i>!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And the bonus is: regifting doesn\u2019t <\/span>just<\/span><\/i> save you money \u2013 it\u2019s also a wonderful way of decluttering and giving unique gifts. What six year old <\/span>wouldn\u2019t<\/span><\/i> want the sunglasses I\u2019d been given at a press day thrown by a running brand? And where <\/span>else<\/span><\/i> would an eight year old get a pair of jockey\u2019s racing glasses that I\u2019d gone home with after interviewing a former champion jump jockey? I mean, really?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes my generosity even leads me to regift things I\u2019d like to keep for myself, such as the charcoal toothpaste and organic lip balm I ferreted away from a celeb-strewn launch party. I even left <\/span>twice<\/span><\/i> so I could pick up goody bags for each of my sisters, so I think we can all agree that I went out on a limb there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, I can\u2019t give away all my possessions \u2013 this isn\u2019t <\/span>Sister Act<\/span><\/i>. So although I considered giving my mother the Penhaligon\u2019s candle that my neighbour gave me during a power cut, I decided to treat myself by keeping it for bath time. Because seriously darling, it\u2019s <\/span>Penhaligon\u2019s<\/span><\/i> – lighting that candle is like setting fire to five pound notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

But luxury items aside, there\u2019s a lot to be said for regifting presents – and any other old crap you\u2019ve accumulated. Just don\u2019t give it to me, or you\u2019ll be getting it back next year!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
