Needless to say the reaction (and speculation beforehand) was a deeply mixed bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all the talk of spending here, investment there and tough decisions there was little for normal people to take from the announcements \u2013 a veritable storm in the media teacup which frenzied itself up ahead of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason it contained nothing of interest for us normals is that it wasn\u2019t a \u2018fiscal event\u2019. The Chancellor \u2013 in other words \u2013 didn\u2019t change any tax rates or give away any new baubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the experts seemed a bit baffled by the whole thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Not sure I&#39;ve ever listened to a chancellorial speech so hard to work out what is happening. Rattling off huge number of figures making it look like big increases in spending on everything. <br>Bear in mind current spending on average on all other than NHS not rising over SR period.<\/p>&mdash; Paul Johnson (@PJTheEconomist) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PJTheEconomist\/status\/1932773562097791146?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 11, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But it has landed at a time when the economic clouds are beginning to gather in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Numbers going the wrong way<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour have been very quick to defend the economic picture, but it is undoubtedly gloomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past 12 months 250,000 people are no longer on employer payrolls (a proxy for unemployment figures that are broken at the moment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest rates have come down a bit \u2013 but thanks to inflation ticking back up close to 4% it is questionable how much more they can shift lower sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GDP has taken a big hit \u2013 figures out today show a 0.3% fall. Although these are largely statistical noise there is a case to be made that National Insurance hikes, minimum wage increases and other effects in April are putting a lot of pressure on the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There is almost no insight in these monthly GDP prints. Complete noise. We sit and watch a load of noise on what is going on in the economy, while the rest of us just try and get by, our wallets feeling tighter by the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I don\u2019t know about you, but things feel tight for me at the moment and I\u2019m meant to be fucking financial whizz. Times are hard and they aren\u2019t getting better. We\u2019ve cut tons of our discretionary spending and it still feels like not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this is being replicated up and down the land then the country is in real trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unemployment is what worries me the most (and I am sure worries Whitehall the most).
